Back Pain Treatment in Mooresville, NC

Dr. John Ashcraft, DC, has treated hundreds of patients with back pain in Mooresville, NC.

Back pain is one of the most common problems people experience. It may develop over time due to accumulated physical stress, posture-related strain, or limited movement.

At ChiroLife Wellness Center, we focus on finding why your back hurts, not just where. Our team performs a detailed exam to locate the problem and build a plan that helps your spine heal naturally.

Our approach is precise and gentle, aimed at restoring motion and balance without unnecessary strain. The first step is to schedule a consultation so we can understand your condition and outline the right treatment path. Call us at (704) 218-9161 to book an appointment.

What Are the Causes of Back Pain?

Back pain comes from years of accumulated physical, chemical, and emotional stress that gradually overwhelms the nervous system’s ability to adapt.

Most of the time, the condition has been developing under the surface for a long time. The pain a patient points to while swinging a golf club, rolling over in bed, or putting on a sock is usually just the last trigger, not the actual cause.

Some of the common causes we see in our practice are:

  • Prolonged sitting or sedentary habits
  • Improper lifting of heavy objects or sudden twisting
  • Excess body weight stressing the lumbar spine
  • Poor core strength due to a lack of exercise
  • Herniated or slipped disc
  • Joint dysfunction in the spine
  • Degenerative disc disease, such as arthritis
  • Spinal injury caused by a fall or an accident

How Do We Diagnose the Root Cause of Back Pain?

At ChiroLife Wellness Center, the clinical evaluation has three main components.

  1. Physical examination
  2. Digital X-rays
  3. Nerve tests and thermal scans

Dr. Ashcraft will first evaluate your range of motion to identify where the pain originates. He then examines the soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

We may use X-rays or MRIs to rule out fractures or disc involvement. They also help us identify the stage of spinal degeneration. Many patients have had these issues developing for years without feeling anything.

Nerve tests and thermal scanning are added as needed based on the patient’s specific condition.

Back Pain Treatment Plan

A standard treatment starts with targeted soft tissue work on areas with muscle spasms or trigger points. We do this whenever necessary before the adjustment. Our chiropractors do not perform an extended massage, but they will do targeted muscle releases when required.

Spinal adjustments are then performed based on what is most effective for the patient, what will help them reach their goals as quickly as possible, and what they are comfortable with.

Our office uses a combination of the following:

  • Soft tissue therapy
  • Handheld instrument adjusting tool
  • The drop table technique, which uses a specialized table section that gently moves during the adjustment
  • Manual manipulation
  • SoftWave therapy

Active care is typically three days a week. Our office does not use a taper model. Progress is checked every 30 days or 12 visits through a re-exam and repeat nerve scanning.

Back Pain Patient Case Study

Post-Surgical Back Pain Management

Patient Information: A woman came in after having two prior lumbar surgeries. Her father had also gone through multiple surgeries. She was trying to avoid a third surgery, which would have fused her lower lumbar spine and sacrum. She came in on a referral.

Symptoms: She experienced chronic low back pain severe enough that surgeons were recommending spinal fusion surgery.

Diagnosis: Lumbar disc and joint degeneration was severe enough that two prior surgeries had not resolved the condition, with further structural breakdown progressing toward the need for fusion.

Treatments: She was taken through the full chiropractic care process at our clinic, including physical exam, a structured care plan, and consistent active care visits.

Outcome: She avoided the surgery entirely. After completing care, she went on to complete multiple Ironman triathlons and qualify for world championships.

Not one to write reviews but the doctors here have been such a blessing! I’m pregnant with my first child and have scoliosis. I’ve been experiencing sciatic pain for years and since going to Chirolife regularly, I’ve noticed a huge difference in how little I experience it now, even with a growing tummy.

FAQS

What are the signs that your back pain will not resolve on its own?
Certain signs suggest back pain needs professional attention if:

  • Pain continues to worsen
  • Pain spreads into the legs or arms
  • Episodes return more frequently
  • Over-the-counter medications stop helping
  • Daily movement becomes limited
  • Stiffness persists despite rest

Early evaluation can help prevent long-term spinal issues.

What is the difference between acute and chronic back pain?
Acute back pain often appears suddenly after an activity such as lifting or twisting. Chronic back pain develops when stress or misalignment continues over time. When pain lasts longer or keeps returning, it may signal an underlying issue that needs evaluation. Addressing the cause early helps reduce the risk of long-term discomfort.

Do I need imaging or X-rays for back pain?
Not every patient requires imaging. X-rays may be recommended when spinal alignment, joint position, or structural changes need closer evaluation. At ChiroLife Wellness Center, we use exam findings, nerve scans, and individual history to determine whether imaging is needed for your specific situation.

Does insurance cover back pain treatment?
Insurance coverage varies based on your specific plan, provider network, and the type of treatment recommended. Our team can verify your coverage, explain your benefits clearly, and outline any expected costs before you begin care.

How long does it take to see results?
The treatment timeline depends on the severity and condition of each patient. Some people notice improvement early, while others progress gradually with continued care.

What are home remedies for back pain?
At-home care may help manage symptoms between visits:

  • Ice during the first two days for comfort
  • Gentle heat after inflammation decreases
  • Light walking to stay mobile
  • Gentle stretching
  • Avoid heavy lifting and twisting
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers, when needed

Home care supports comfort but does not correct spinal alignment. Patients are advised on posture and movement habits that may be contributing to their condition. Recommendations are made based on each patient’s specific situation.

What are the long-term effects of ignoring back pain treatment?
If left untreated, the condition continues to decay, similar to an untreated cavity that eventually leads to a root canal or extraction. Ongoing spinal stress may continue to affect movement, posture, and nerve function. Over time, you may develop permanent structural damage.
