Headache & Migraine Treatment in Mooresville

Dr. John Ashcraft, DC, has treated hundreds of patients in Mooresville suffering from recurring headaches and migraines. These conditions can interfere with work, sleep, and daily life, especially when they return frequently or become more intense over time.

Headaches and migraines often develop due to tension, posture issues, or spinal misalignment rather than a single trigger. At ChiroLife Wellness Center, we focus on identifying what is causing the problem, not just managing the pain.

Our approach is gentle and precise. Each treatment plan is designed to improve spinal function, reduce tension, and support the nervous system naturally. The first step is a consultation to understand your symptoms and create a clear path forward.

Difference Between Headaches & Migraines

Headaches and migraines are significantly different conditions and should not be grouped together.

Headaches that are not migraines are often caused by stress and tension affecting the upper neck and the surrounding tissues.

Migraines are a neurological event that starts in the nervous system and impacts the arteries and tissues of the brain itself. They have many different triggers and vary significantly from person to person.

Causes of Headaches and Migraines

Physical and lifestyle factors play a major role in developing headaches and migraines.

Common causes include:

  • Emotional stress
  • Fatigue
  • Dehydration
  • Certain sights, smells, and sounds
  • Muscle tension in the upper cervical (neck) area

Identifying each patient’s specific triggers is part of the migraine protocol in our clinic.

How Do We Diagnose Headaches and Migraines?

  • Hands-on physical exam: Dr. Ashcraft performs a detailed physical exam of the upper neck, checking for tension, restricted movement, and areas of sensitivity. This region plays a key role in many headache and migraine patterns, so a careful hands-on evaluation helps identify what may be contributing to your symptoms.

  • Nerve scans: At ChiroLife Wellness Center, we use specialized scanning such as SEMG to check for imbalances in the nervous system that can’t be felt or seen on the surface.

  • Imaging: On-site digital X-rays may be used to look at the structure and alignment of your spine, helping us understand how long-term stress or wear may be contributing to your condition.

Chiropractic Treatment Plan for Headaches & Migraines

The treatment approach for headaches and migraines follows the same general neck protocol with the addition of three specific components:

Neuro Systemic Modulation: It is an upper cervical manipulation technique used by Dr. Ashcraft specifically for migraine patients.

Myotonal Flow Release: This is a soft-tissue technique applied to the suboccipital muscles of the upper neck to reduce muscle tension.

VieLight Alpha Neuro Stimulator: It is a photobiomodulation (non-invasive light therapy) device that uses near-infrared light. It helps reduce inflammation in the brain and the surrounding tissues.

The majority of our patients see gradual improvement over several visits as their nerve system resets. It is more of a process than a single event.

Headache & Migraine Patient Case Study

35 Years of Migraines Improved with Chiropractic Care

Patient Information: A woman came in after suffering from migraines for 35 years. She had tried every available treatment with no results. She had seen multiple chiropractors, physical therapists, and neurologists. She had been to the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic. She had tried Botox injections to the head and neck and had gone through every available medication. Nothing had worked.

Symptoms: Chronic migraines spanning 35 years. Having more than four migraine-free days in a month was considered a good month. She had essentially no quality of life for 35 years as a result of the condition. She had an active migraine during her first visit to the clinic.

Diagnosis: Nerve imbalance and dysfunction in the upper neck region, specifically involving the structures at the occiput, Atlas, and C2, along with the surrounding soft tissues.

Treatments: Dr. Ashcraft performed his proprietary treatment on her during the first visit while her husband watched. This included Neuro Systemic Modulation, Myotonal Flow Release, and the VieLight Alpha Neuro Stimulator. She started active care immediately following the initial visit.

Outcome: During the first treatment, her migraine reduced from a 9/10 pain to 2/10 in about four minutes. A couple of months into care, she had a 31-day streak with no migraines. She had only about three or four migraines total since starting care, and they were getting less and less frequent. She said her kids had never known her migraine-free in their whole lives and were happy to have gotten their mother back.

Migraine Patient FAQs

Who is a good candidate for headache chiropractic care?

  • Adults with chronic or recurring headaches
  • Desk workers and remote employees
  • Athletes and active individuals
  • High-stress individuals

Can a chiropractor really help migraines?
Chiropractic care may help when migraines are linked to spinal tension or nerve irritation. A clinical evaluation is used to determine if care is appropriate for your condition.

How many sessions are needed for headache improvement?
Every patient is different. Results typically begin within about six to eight visits. About 15% of patients notice improvement on the very first visit. Another 15% feel sore the following day, as if they overdid it at the gym after a long break. Some people do not feel much different right away. It takes several visits to start resetting the nerve system. It is more of a process than a single event.

Is chiropractic treatment safe for migraines?
Yes. The techniques used are adjusted based on what the patient’s body can tolerate. Dr. Ashcraft starts by assessing the upper neck structures and tailors the treatment to each patient’s specific findings and comfort level. Some patients notice a change on the very first visit. For others, the process is more gradual. The approach is always guided by the patient’s response to care.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?
No referral is needed. You can call the office directly or book online. Once your appointment is confirmed, the office sends you paperwork to complete before your first visit so you can get started right away.

What are the preventive tips for migraines?
Preventing migraines often involves addressing posture, daily habits, and overall lifestyle. Keeping screens at eye level and maintaining proper sitting posture can reduce strain on the neck. Supporting the lower back and avoiding prolonged forward head posture may also help limit tension.
In addition, maintaining consistent sleep habits, managing stress levels, and staying physically active can support overall nervous system function and reduce the likelihood of migraine triggers.

What are the home remedies for headaches & migraines?
For neck-related headaches, what you do at home matters. Our chiropractors discuss sleeping posture and positioning with patients, along with stretching to keep things moving between visits.
Screen time and posture play a big role. Spending too much time looking at screens puts the head forward and the shoulders forward, and over time, that creates real damage to the neck structures. Cutting that down and being aware of how you are sitting makes a difference in reducing the frequency of episodes.

What are the long-term effects of ignoring headaches and migraines?
Without treatment, headaches and migraines do not get better on their own. The underlying issues in the nervous system and upper neck continue to build over time.
Migraines are a neurological event that starts in the nervous system. If the root cause is not addressed, the episodes do not reduce in frequency. The longer it goes untreated, the more it affects daily life, the ability to function, and overall health.
