Herniated Disc Treatment in Mooresville, NC

Pain that travels down the arm or leg, numbness, or weakness often point to nerve compression from a herniated disc. Many patients notice symptoms after a simple movement like bending, lifting, or even getting out of bed, but the underlying disc stress has usually been present for some time.

At ChiroLife Wellness Center, Dr. John Ashcraft, DC, has over 20 years of experience evaluating disc-related conditions, including cases where symptoms do not follow a typical pattern or fail to improve with prior care. The focus is on identifying whether symptoms are coming from disc involvement, surrounding inflammation, or nerve irritation.

If symptoms do not improve as expected, further evaluation, such as imaging, may be recommended.

What Is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner portion of a spinal disc pushes outward through its outer layer. This can irritate nearby nerves and lead to pain, tingling, or weakness.

Herniated discs most commonly affect the lower back or neck, but can occur anywhere along the spine. When a nerve is involved, symptoms often “radiate or refer into the arms or legs,” depending on the level affected.

Common Causes of a Herniated Disc

Most people think the disc is the main problem, as if it is simply squishing out and hitting the nearby nerves. In most herniated disc cases, that is not the full picture.

When there is a subluxation (dislocation) or nerve imbalance at a spinal level, the brain protects that area by locking up the spinal joints. When the spinal joints are locked up, they stop carrying their fair share of workload. To compensate, the disc takes on more load. Over time, it starts to wear out much faster than it should.

There is also a chemical component. A large part of what creates the pain and nerve irritation is the inflammation and swelling around the affected area, not just the disc pressing on the nerve.

Symptoms of a Herniated Disc

It is worth noting that some people may have disc changes that they do not even know are there. They are completely without symptoms.

When a herniation does become symptomatic, it typically presents as:

  • Local pain that is sharp and stabbing, or deep and achy
  • Radiating pain, numbness, or tingling down the arm (cervical) or down the leg (lumbar), because the irritated area is affecting the nearby nerve

How Do We Diagnose a Herniated Disc?

The process starts with a physical exam and a neurological exam. The doctor assesses range of motion, palpates the soft tissues, and checks joint mobility at each level.

Digital X-rays: X-rays often show wear and degeneration at the affected level. When the findings on the X-ray match the patient’s symptoms, we will identify disc involvement. However, a disc herniation cannot be definitively confirmed without an MRI.

MRI: An MRI is ordered when the patient is not responding to care as expected. In most cases, treatment begins first. If progress is not where it should be after several weeks, an MRI is used to get a clearer picture of what is happening.

In one of our patient cases, an MRI showed that the disc material had migrated upward into the spinal canal. That patient was referred out for co-management. That level of severity is rare. Most disc cases respond well to chiropractic care without needing imaging beyond X-rays.

Herniated Disc Treatment Plan

The goal of treatment is to restore motion in the spinal joints so they start doing their share of the workload again and take the pressure off the disc.

When the spinal joints are adjusted and begin moving freely, the neural patterns open up, the surrounding tissues relax, and the disc gets a chance to recover. Follow-up MRIs on patients who become fully without symptoms often look very similar to their original scans. The disc shape may not change much, but the nerve function is restored.

Treatment includes:

  • Targeted soft tissue work on areas of spasm or tension
  • Drop table adjusting
  • Instrument adjusting
  • Manual manipulation
  • SoftWave therapy

Active care is three days a week. The timeline depends on how long the condition has been present and the severity of the degeneration.

Herniated Disc Patient Case Study

Slipped Disc Co-Managed with Neurosurgeons Leading to Better Surgical Outcomes

Patient Information: When Dr. Ashcraft worked alongside neurosurgeons in Charlotte, one surgeon began sending pre-surgical disc patients to him for care while they waited two to three months for their scheduled surgery.

Symptoms: Patients with disc herniations severe enough to be scheduled for surgery, with significant nerve involvement and functional limitations.

Diagnosis: Disc herniations confirmed and scheduled for surgical intervention by the treating neurosurgeon.

Treatments: Patients received chiropractic care in the weeks leading up to their scheduled surgery date.

Outcome: So many patients improved enough during that period that they were able to avoid surgery entirely. The surgeon noticed the results and wanted to know what was being done differently. For the patients who did go on to have surgery, the surgeon found that they went in with better blood flow, better nerve conduction, and less scar tissue and adhesions. For some patients who still required surgery, the surgeon observed better pre-surgical tissue condition.

Herniated Disc Treatment FAQs

Can a herniated disc heal without surgery?
Many herniated discs improve with conservative care focused on spinal mechanics and movement support. Reducing irritation and restoring function often helps the body adapt and recover.

How long does herniated disc treatment take?
Most patients begin responding within the first few weeks of active care. The timeline depends on the severity of degeneration and how long the condition has been present.

What activities should I avoid with a herniated disc?
Activities involving heavy lifting, twisting, or prolonged sitting may need modification during care. You will receive specific guidance based on what is contributing to your symptoms.

When should you seek treatment for a herniated disc?
Evaluation is recommended if pain travels into the arms or legs, numbness develops, or symptoms persist. As Dr. Ashcraft highlights, early evaluation helps identify underlying issues before they progress further.

What are the long-term effects of ignoring a herniated disc?
A normal, healthy disc functions like a fresh, moist sponge. It has flexibility and shock absorption. If left untreated, it desiccates (disc looses water and become less flexible) and eventually becomes like a flat, dry, shriveled sponge with no shock absorption.

Over time, people can lose actual height because the discs stop absorbing water. The spine begins to lose nutrients, and the progressive degeneration has a significant impact on the nervous system at those levels.
